Foggy Basin Interview with Jamie Sands!

Huge thanks to author Jamie Sands for organizing the interviews with our bunch!

What do you love about writing Foggy Basin?

I love writing Romantic Comedies because they come really easy to me. I guess a lifetime of watching RomComs will do that to you. My favourite thing about Foggy Basin is the tight knit group of authors participating – we have an active group chat and share ideas. I might wake up to someone asking if one of Mickey’s alpacas could have escaped for a fun scene in someone else’s book, and if I need someone for a scene I know I can jump in and ask. This cooperation makes the project feel like our own little small town, in a way – which is very fun.

Who are your characters for season three?
Aster was introduced in Finding Tane, my first Foggy Basin book. He’s an AUDHD trans menace and I adore him, I knew he needed his own book.

BL suggested the theme for Season three to be farmers/out of towners and it all clicked into place. Mickey sold Christmas trees in Tane’s Holiday and then he and Aster met up again in King of Pride.

Mickey is a sweet, somewhat reclusive alpaca farmer, and Aster is a new college graduate determined to get his writing career started.

What can readers expect from your book?
In this book you will find:
Best friend’s big brother
Age gap
Trans MC (also a drag king)
Alpacas
Chaotic group chats
Demisexual rep
Fighting the construction of a Gen AI data center / Civil disobedience
HEA

What are your favourite tropes?
Grumpy/Sunshine is probably my absolute favourite, love a good opposites attract/rivals to lovers as well

My least favourite is probably forbidden or like mafia style crime stuff.

Who are your favourite romance authors to read?

Alexis Hall, Anita Kelly, Casey McQuiston and Anna Zabo

Are you an early bird or night owl?
I’m an early bird, I get my best work done in the morning and I want to be in bed by ten.

Coffee, tea or hot chocolate?
Hot chocolate, or for the Kiwis, Milo is my true drink of choice

Star Wars or Star Trek?
I could never get into Trek. Star Wars all the way for me.

If you could transform into any animal, what would you choose and why?
I’d choose cat most likely, but ideally I’d like the ability to change into any animal at all, like Beast Boy or the Animorphs

What do you snack on while you write?
Potato chips, chocolate biscuits, chocolate bars, cheese and crackers, I am pretty open-minded about all kinds of snacks, to be honest

Do you have a writing routine? If so, please describe it
When I’m being formal about it I’ll do a page of journalling longhand first, then get to typing. I like to clear off my desk before I start, and I like to have brown noise playing, and a pomodoro timer to break it up.

However I write just as well body doubling with someone at a cafe and just getting as much done as possible, so… whatever works!

What’s the best book you’ve read this year?
The Correspondent by Virginia Evans really blew me away, I also loved Raising Hare by Chloe Dalton, it’s really stuck with me.

For MM romance the best I’ve read this year (and the most unhinged) is Brake Me by Marly and Athena Bliss. It’s ridiculously good. Close runner up is Playing Games by Riley Hart.
