Meet Gabbi Grey!

Greetings,  y’all! Foggy Basin Season Three is off to a great start and once again I want to thank author Jamie Sands for putting these interviews together! Gabbi and I have been a part of a few group projects together in the past, but this time we’ve actually. had time to get to know each other and I’m grateful for her friendship!

USA Today Bestselling author Gabbi Grey lives in beautiful British Columbia, where her fur baby chin-poo keeps her safe from the nasty neighborhood squirrels. Working for the government by day, she spends her early mornings writing contemporary, gay, sweet, and dark erotic BDSM romances. While she firmly believes in happy endings, she also believes in making her characters suffer before finding their true love. She also writes m/f romances as Gabbi Black and Gabbi Powell.

What do you love about writing Foggy Basin?
Oh, a great question to start! I joined Foggy Basin in season two. I was honored to be asked to come along for the ride. I love small-town gay romances, and I also love group projects. I think my favorite part is having characters from other authors drop into my stories. And sharing my guys with other stories.

Who are your characters for season three?
Interestingly, Sam and Soren initially appeared in my season two book. Sam manages The Pet Pantry over in Hartsville – the place where pet owners from Foggy Basin can go if they want more for their beloved companions than the feed store offers. Soren is a new pet parent. In season two, he worked with dog trainer Noah to get his black lab puppy Tibby, into fighting form (in other words – not to destroy umbrellas).

I hadn’t even begun to think about season three last year as I was still focused on Noah and Christian – my couple from season two. Then an eagle-eyed reviewer said they couldn’t wait for Sam and Soren’s book. I was like…HUH? No! Uh…maybe? I hadn’t even considered it, even though there was a throwaway line at the end of Finding Noah. Okay. So how to set them up?

Easy! Put them in the hallway alone in Noah’s Holiday – the Christmas short.

Sam leaves suddenly, and only Soren knows why – and he’s not talking. Great! What about more intrigue?
Each man speaks to Christian and Noah separately during the Pride Day in Foggy Basin – as portrayed in my book, Dancing Through Pride. Great! Now I had everything set up for Keystrokes and Kittens.
(Thank you to that eagle-eyed reviewer!)

What can readers expect from your book?
I’ll start by saying there’s a content warning, so please be aware of that. The death of a pet was necessary for Sam’s character arc – but that doesn’t make it any easier.

That’s the first thing. The second, which I didn’t even mention in the blurb, is that Sam is ACE. That was a new aspect of a character that I’d never explored before. I thought Sam just needed a slow burn – he let me know that wasn’t at all what he needed. I will say Soren’s understanding sort of broke something inside me – we should all be so lucky as to have someone like him in our lives. This is a heartwarming story that tackles
some tough themes, but has a true happily ever after.

Are you an early bird or night owl?
I am such an early bird! I’m up at 2am. I feed the dogs, then we all go for a walk. I eat breakfast and am at my desk by 3am. Then it’s four hours of writing and marketing before I start my ten-hour workday. I should probably say that I’m asleep by 7pm. I’ve been doing this for years, and it really works for me. I should also mention I’m at my desk at that hour of the morning almost every day of the year – including holidays. I only skip when I’m out late the night before – which happens very rarely.

I can’t keep my eyes open afterabout eight at night. I’ll also say that I’m lucky my two trusty companions (senior rescue dogs) sleep twenty-three hours a day and, aside from cuddling, demand very little attention.

Coffee, tea or hot chocolate?
Tea lattés daily with hot chocolate on special occasions.

Star Wars or Star Trek?
Not picking sides. Sorry – just not doing it.

If you could transform into any animal, what would you choose and why?
A squirrel! Squirrels are my spirit animals. I’m always taking on new writing projects that my friends (and I) call ‘squirrels’. I love squirrels so much that I wrote a squirrel shifter book. Ethan’s a hoot, and poor Kingston – a racoon shifter – can barely keep up. Readers love Unlocked and Unlost.

What do you snack on while you write?
When I finish a book, I either get a Nanaimo bar or a Cadbury Easter Crème egg.

What’s the best book you’ve read this year?
What’s the best book you’ve read this year? Oh! That’s so hard! I would say Jules Cassidy, PI by Suzanne Brockmann. I’ve loved all the books in the Troubleshooters series, but I’ve especially loved the characters of Robin and Jules. I’ve followed their love story and now Jules, having left the FBI, is embarking on a new phase in his life. I love it!

Second choice would be Kaje Harper’s All These Years. I haven’t read all her wolves books,
but this prequel is a good one and I love historicals set in the 20 th century.
