Friendy Friday with Kelly Violet

Thank GOODNESS it's Friday, am I right? It was the first full week of school for my kidlets, first week I worked one-on-one with my students, and today I have zero voice. Which some may say is an improvement, but I'm happy to be home listening to Prince on vinyl (be sure to follow me on Instagram for #VinylFriday posts) and resting my voice.

With August closing up tomorrow, I can tell you I had a fairly productive summer, although we always want to accomplish more. I wrote one book (Ghoul Me Once: Magic and Mayhem Universe/Shifted Book Two, out October 21), finished edits on two (Summer of Hush, out October 8th and A Peace Offering, out December 2019), revamped my website, and semi-plotted out the next four or so books. Okay, so that's kind of a lot, but I'm telling you, my brain is bursting right now and my body just won't keep up with the demand! But I appreciate each and every one of you who reached out, who wrote a review, who shared their reader reactions, and made me smile. You guys rock seriously hard!

Speaking of people who rock, this lady right here...Kelly Violet. I met her at RT Reno and damn but she's a spitfire with the cutest smile! We chatted and hung out a bit and since she's a California girl like myself, we had a lot to talk about, including a love of music. Unfortunately I won't be seeing her next week like I'd hoped as The Romance Retreat was canceled (see last week's blog post for a full update), but I have a feeling we'll meet up again soon!

Here's my interview with Kelly:

1. Give us a visual of you dancing. The Carlton? Napoleon Dynamite? Solid Gold?

Let's see... I'll start with the Electric Slide. I love to dance so you'll probably see me doing it all at some point.

I'm going to hold you to that. I love the Electric Slide.

2. What’s one thing every reader should know about you?

I'm awesome lol. Just kidding (maybe). I love love. It's a dream come true to share my stories with the world, but at the heart of it for me is the journey to self-love. I'm constantly learning new things about others and myself and I hope you see that in my stories.

She really is awesome, no kidding about it.

3. What’s your worst habit as a writer?

I tend to edit as I write. Le sigh. It's a constant battle for me.

Just means less work after, right?

4. Ever get caught reading/writing sexy times in an awkward place/time/situation?

My first 3 books were basically written at a restaurant/bar. From time to time I'd have curious/bold people (mainly guys) try to read over my shoulder. My weekend writing spot was definitely interesting!

I've found a few old bars that are fun to write in. I bet you made them blush haha.

5. What is the best reader response you’ve ever received?

I love hearing from readers online or in person. The most recent one was having a reader come up to me at a signing. We chatted for several minutes after she recognized my first book. It's the little things for me.

The little things keep us going for sure.

6. What is the most fascinating/creepy/disgusting thing you’ve discovered because of writing?

Hmm. This is an interesting question. For my latest book, I did some research on cyberstalking. It was all the things because it's too real and prevalent nowadays.

Way too real and prevalent. That is super creepy.

7. Name a book that scared the bejeebers out of you and why it scared you.

I'm not sure I've read it yet.

Ohhhh well, whenever you're ready, I've got recs!

8. What music inspires you?

All music. I love pop, rock, r&b, country and everything in between and on the fringe. Music is a huge part of my life, from an early age. It moves me in ways I can't explain sometimes. And it also inspires me all the time. I wrote song lyrics for my first book and, for me, it's set the tone for the series.

I knew you were awesome. Now you're legendary.

9. Did a teacher in school ever encourage or discourage your desire to write? Care to share?

In school, I stuck to academic writing. Creative writing has always been at the back of my mind but I never really pursued it in school, besides sharing a poem or two in a literary magazine. I'm sure some of my teachers would've encouraged it if they'd known. I had some fantastic teachers, especially in elementary and high school.

10. What's your favorite genre to write? And...what's a genre you haven't written but would LOVE to write?

My first few books are in the new adult subgenre of romance. I think about half my story ideas are firmly in that category. The others are a mix of romantic suspense, contemporary, and erotic romance. I'm hoping to dabble in the latter ones very soon, so stay tuned!

11. What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Honestly? Writing and publishing. There's so much noise out there that adds to self-doubt. That added to my own self-doubt over the years. Once I pushed through it and let myself be me (angsty, flirty, naughty) the words started coming. And I hope they never stop. There's no greater joy for me then seeing my books...my stories out in the world.

I hope you keep it up. You rockl!

Thank you, Kelly, for visiting today! Here are all the places you can find Kelly.

I'd love to give away a copy of one of Kelly's books to a commenter on this post! All you have to do is tell me what you accomplished this summer. Even if it was binge watching all 13 seasons of Supernatural, not getting sunburned, or the most excellent vacation, I want to know! We'll need those memories to keep us going into fall... Speaking of fall, it is my favorite time of year and I absolutely LOVE Halloween. Most of you know that already. So with that...Stay Tuned for more Rock 'n' Romance...
