By Amy Lane
First of all, thank you, Ro, for letting me come talk about my new book, Slow Pitch—and about baseball and music.
Of course, when most people think about baseball music, they think John Fogerty’s “Center Field”—because “Put me in coach!” is the secret heart cry of every player on the bench, right?
But that’s not the only baseball song out there!
Of course, “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” is another classic—and one we probably all know the words to, but it seems that music of all stamps is part of the entertainment package of baseball as a whole. When I go to minor league games for the River Cats, every player has his signature song as he steps onto the plate—and even the fireworks show is set to music, and that’s always one of my family’s favorite things!
In fact, I think one of my favorite memories of a baseball game was right after my son discovered Gaelic rock—Dropkick Murphy’s and Flogging Molly—and they played two of his favorite songs to the fireworks display! I sort of loved those songs—“Shipping Out to Boston” and “Johnny We Hardly Knew Ye” myself. (We were both sort of disappointed they didn’t play “Rocky Road to Dublin” but that’s a little complex for fireworks music.)
And that’s not even including the music played during the pregame shows. My kids belong to a dance troupe that’s performed at our minor league games on a couple of occasions, and now, I’ve got, “Let it Rock” wedded with baseball almost permanently in my mind.
But, I have to admit, as much as I relate all these songs to baseball, I think my favorite “baseball song” of all times goes back to the movie Major League, when a young, pre-douchebag Charlie Sheen, strode out to the pitcher’s mound to the song “Wild Thing.”
And since my book Slow Pitch starts with two players from opposing teams doing the “wild thing” in a darkened baseball field in the second chapter, well, I think it’s particularly appropriate.
So there’s more to baseball music than “Center Field”—but there’s more to baseball than what happens on the field, too. Which is why sports and romance and music can capture our attention for hours at a time.
Tenner Gibson has a job he enjoys, a prickly ex-wife, and an adorable daughter he wouldn’t trade for the world. With no romance, no sex life, and no other hobbies, a rec league softball team is as close as he gets to hedonism.
But life throws him a curveball when cocky Ross McTierney sets his sights on getting under Tenner’s skin.
One explosion of lust later, Tenner wonders what possessed him to have a quickie with Ross, and Ross wonders how to do it again.
Tenner has eight weeks to convince his tiny modern family that Ross is what’s best for him. Ross has eight weeks to get used to the idea that complicated doesn’t always mean bad. Their sex life is moving at the speed of light, and everything in their relationship is coming at them too fast….
But together, they might make a connection and knock it out of the park.
